Steamboat – "Steamboat Powder in February"
February 5, 2007 It had been several years since we had skied at Steamboat and we had forgotten how much varied terrain there was available for everyone. Day 1 Friday was bitter cold but the snow was terrific. Temps at the top were - 7 with winds blowing up the mountain. We lasted about 2 hours but knew the next day would be a powder day. On Saturday we got out relatively early and there was plenty of snow and powder for the group. Over thelast week over 20 inches of new snow had fallen and the report was 6 new. In spots we were skiing knee deep pow. Even at days end when we skied the Closets, the trees had some untracked lines and plenty of soft broken snow. That evening we enjoyed the Sports Illustrated Next Snow Search event at the base of the area. This event featured a big competition of the top 9 - 15 years olds. The level of competition was inspiring. There were fireworks, a laser light shows and a great crowd. Sunday we made it on mountain before 9 and the groomers were perfect corduroy. We had the pleasure of skiing with Larry Mashaw a local of 22 years as he showed us around the hill. One area we had never skied was off the Pony Express lift. here they had groomed several runs that seldom are groomed, Black runs with pitch and no one on this side of the mountain. That and the stashes in the trees assured us a great weekend. At the end of the morning we also jumped into the Chutes. Here the snow was still soft and full of broken powder. We look forward to our next annual trip back as the skiing, riding and town was once again a delight.
